Alfred E. Slinkard, C.M.
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
Alfred Slinkard is the father of the pulse industry in Canada. His research in agronomy improved the efficiency and economic returns for several generations of Canadian farmers who now feed thousands of people. His pioneering work on chickpea and the development of two cultivars of lentil, the Laird and the Eston, have improved soils and enhanced rotation with cereals. Working directly with producers, he participated in marketing the novel crops and developed innovative methods and machinery for planting.
