Harvey Thommasen is a family physician and professor known for his exemplary work in exposing the challenges of Canadian rural medicine. Working closely with First Nations communities, he has addressed issues ranging from diabetes, obesity and depression to residential school syndrome and bear maulings. He has served as professor and chair of the University of Northern British Columbia's Department of Community Health and participated in the creation of the institution's new Northern Medical Program. His writings as well as his contributions to many nature publications express yet another level of his passion and dedication to his region's distinctive lifestyle and beautiful environment.
