Norman Hillmer is a leading historian of Canadian foreign policy. A professor of history and international affairs at Carleton University, he mentors students whose work focuses on peacekeeping and on Canada’s relationship with the United Kingdom and United States. He has shed light on the factors that led to Canada’s emergence as an independent country in the
20th century, particularly the creation of our modern foreign policy regime. He is also committed to increasing public knowledge of our nation’s past, and was one of the major players behind the creation of the Canadian Encyclopedia.
