He has played a major role in the development of the Canadian bookselling and publishing industry. His accomplishments in the field are many, including the founding of Canadian Books in Print, one of the most important directories available today. Former director of the University of Toronto Press, he was elected president of both the Canadian Booksellers Association and the Association of Canadian Publishers. He has been a strong promoter of Canadian books abroad and has also supported and encouraged smaller publishers throughout the country. In addition, he was instrumental in the creation of the successful Canadian copyright licensing agency CanCopy.
