He is known and valued as a supporter of visual artists across the country and as a generous benefactor to the Vancouver Art Gallery. President of the Gallery in the 1960s, he significantly increased its stature with the extended loan of his private art collection. Many of these works remain there today and, since 1979, he has donated pieces annually. His generosity and voluntarism have extended to many other organizations, including the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, St. Paul's Hospital and the Vancouver Foundation's Arts Advisory Committee.
