Former Dean of Arts, then Principal of the Sydney Campus of St. Francis Xavier University and founding President of University College of Cape Breton, he continues to teach at the latter institution as a Professor of Psychology. A concerned community member, he was instrumental in establishing a branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association in Antigonish and has been active within the Alexander Graham Bell Institute, the Cape Breton Island Regional Hospital Foundation and the Centre Bras d'Or.
