Having joined the Army Cadets at sixteen, he served in the RCMP for many years in the isolated settlement of Selkirk in the Yukon before becoming a member of the territorial Legislature and subsequently its Sergeant-at-Arms. He and his wife have spent a lifetime in the service of the people of the Yukon.
