Joining the Alberta Research Council thirty-two years ago, he rose to be head of its Fuel Sciences Division. Now a professor at the University of Alberta and Vice-Chairman of the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board, he is an authority on coal research and the intelligent use of natural resources. He has also pioneered in the transportation of coal through pipelines.
