An internationally acclaimed pioneer of hypothermia in heart surgery, he developed the leading Canadian centre for cardiovascular surgery at the Toronto General Hospital. Formerly senior surgeon of this hospital and professor at the University of Toronto, he is now Professor Emeritus and Chairman of the University's Cardiovascular Surgery Committee.
