      Mr. Gardiner has been described as a "creative banker". In the course of a long career in the Royal Bank of Canada, during which he rose to Vice-Chairman, he contributed notably to the financing and operation of many voluntary enterprises promoting youth, culture, health and sports, notably the Duke of Edinburgh's Commonwealth Study Conference and Roy Thompson Hall, Toronto. In his professional capacity he has helped to develop trade with the Pacific and Far East.
