Endowed with sensitivity and originality, William Glassco has succeeded in lifting Canadian theatre out of its 'branch plant' status. This he has done through the production of plays in a number of theatres, but chiefly at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto, which he founded in 1971. Besides producing plays from foreign sources, he has strongly encouraged the work of Canadian playwrights and, through his own translations, has made the plays of Michel Tremblay accessible to the English-speaking public.
