Wounded and taken prisoner in Dieppe, he came away from his war-time experience with a desire to aid those in distress. All the while pursuing a prolific career in the business world, he worked for many charitable organizations, including the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires and the Centre François Michel, dedicated primarily to helping veterans and mentally handicapped children become integrated into the community.
