He was a tennis champion in his university years and a member of the Canadian Olympic Hockey Team in 1936. He became a chartered accountant in Montreal, but throughout his career he has continued his strong support of athletics, as President of the Canadian Olympic Association; organizer of the XXI Olympiad in Montreal; President of the Commonwealth Games Association; and Chairman of the National Advisory Council on Fitness and Amateur Sports.
