A renowned Canadian endocrinologist, this Manitoba native is presently head of the Department of Physiology at the University of Manitoba. Founder of the internationally respected Protein and Polypeptide Hormone Laboratory, which supplies human growth hormone for the treatment of children with pituitary disorders, he is best known as the discoverer of human prolactin, a hormone which plays an important role in infertility and reproductive disorders.

His career is marked by excellence as an internationally renowned researcher and administrator. As president of the former Medical Research Council of Canada, he initiated unprecedented and far-reaching changes to the benefit of the research community. Through innovative leadership and tireless effort, he laid the foundation for the establishment of our nation's premier federal health agency, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. The recipient of the Gairdner Foundation Wightman Award, he is currently chairman of Genome Canada and senior fellow at the Centre for the Advancement of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. This is a promotion within the Order.
