As a seaman, he voyaged throughout the world and became widely respected for his ability and knowledge. For many years, he was captain of the research vessel Vema, which provided much valuable scientific data from the oceans. Since the decommissioning of his ship in 1981, he has been actively involved in community life in his hometown of Lunenburg, N.S.
