An athlete of international standing, she has won at many track competitions, among them the Olympics and the Commonwealth Games. Much respected for her promotion of amateur sport, she has also worked for human rights, particularly as a founder of Nellie's, a Toronto hostel for battered women. As the director of Sport Canada, she continued her support of athletics on a wider scale.
