Born in Hamilton, she commenced water-skiing as a child in Ottawa, where her family had moved. She rapidly developed her skill to the point of excellence, winning the Canadian and North American slalom championships in the 1970s. By 1979 she had become women's world champion in the international competitions in Toronto. She is also a sports broadcaster and an orchestra percussionist.
