Born in Toronto, he joined the National Film Board in 1941. In 1952, after producing more than three hundred documentaries, he became a television director with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In the sixties he worked at television drama and feature films in England and on his return became Chairman of NFB. His creative work in film and broadcasting has had wide influence in Canada and abroad.
