As a child in England she became fascinated by the Basques. After the death of her husband, an Ottawa architect, she studied in Mexico and Europe and became an accomplished researcher in her subject. Her discovery of a sixteenth-century Basque whaling settlement in Labrador has led to the recognition of the "Basque connection" in early Canadian history.
