Shirley Post has long been a determined and influential proponent of improved health care for children. She was the driving force behind the establishment of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, in Ottawa, and served as its first director of nursing, helping to oversee the institution's development. She headed the Canadian Institute of Child Health, as well as the Washington-based Association for the Care of Children's Health. Also active as a volunteer, she helped to steer the Canadian Standards Association's work on child-resistant packaging and children's playground guidelines. In her retirement, she continues to volunteer with numerous health care organizations.
