Michael Patrick Collins, C.M.
Oakville, Ontario
Michael Collins is one of Canada’s foremost experts in structural engineering. Professor emeritus at the University of Toronto, and a leader in studies on the behavior of reinforced concrete subject to shear, he helped develop more accurate codes of practice, methods of assessing structural failure, and procedures for repairing and strengthening structures in distress. He co-developed the seminal Modified Compression Field Theory, which has directly impacted the work of structural engineers worldwide. He is an outstanding researcher and mentor, and his academic publications have become international classics—a testament to his towering contributions.
