Lieutenant-Colonel Calvin was the commander of a reinforced battalion during difficult and hazardous United Nations operations in the Medak Pocket, Croatia, in September 1993. His unit, which included two French Army companies, secured a neutral zone between Croat and Serb forces in the face of deliberate destruction by those withdrawing. Battalion members were praised for their discipline, motivation and actions while under fire or personally threatened. Through personal leadership and example, Lieutenant-Colonel Calvin developed a cohesive team that carried out one of the most successful military operations in support of the humanitarian effort in this theatre.
