As commanding officer of HMCS Protecteur, Captain McClean was tasked with providing relief and humanitarian assistance to southern Florida and an island in the Bahamas in the wake of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Faced with devastation, the ship and her company carried out both relief operations in an outstanding manner, bringing much-needed material and reconstruction aid to many communities. Under Captain McClean's leadership, initiative and personal example of duty, the ship's company earned international respect and esteem.
