Lieutenant-Colonel Hickey was deployed to Romania from August 2017 to January 2018 as part of Canada’s contribution to NATO’s air policing missions over Eastern Europe. As the Air Task Force commander, he superbly managed operational risk and coordinated support, discipline and host nation engagements. In the process, he executed over 250 sorties, and accumulated more than 350 flight hours with a fleet of only four fighter aircraft. Lieutenant-Colonel Hickey’s inspiring leadership and steely dedication ensured mission success, bringing credit to Canada.
