On March 19, 1994, firefighter Griffith demonstrated exceptional professionalism during an incident in Navan, Ontario, that nearly claimed the life of a fellow firefighter. Soon after entering a burning residence, both firefighters were hit by a backdraft explosion, leaving the colleague disoriented. Firefighter Griffith went immediately to his aid and, on a second attempt, managed to guide him to safety. As a result of his selfless actions, he suffered burns to his face and neck.
