As the founders of the grassroots Lake Winnipeg Research Consortium (LWRC), Allan Kristofferson, Alexander George Salki and Michael Stainton are dedicated to restoring Lake Winnipeg to its former health through scientific research and public involvement. Their volunteer efforts enabled the LWRC to acquire a retired Canadian Coast Guard ship for use as a research vessel to monitor water quality and collect data in order to reduce toxic algae in the lake. LWRC also provides scholarships to students and knowledge-sharing for those wishing to invest in their own conservation projects.
