Meritorious Service Medal (civil division)
A professional mountaineer, Mr. Haberl is one of two Canadians who reached the pinnacle of K2, a mountain on the border between Pakistan and China, in July 1993. He has also achieved six first ascents, climbing via a particular route each time to reach various summits. During Mr. Haberl's K2 descent, his fellow climber died, but Mr. Haberl is determined to carry out their mutual goal of making people aware of environmental issues.
