Father Fred Monk founded Mission Mexico as a millennium project whereby his parishioners were asked to contribute a loonie a week throughout 1999 to build an orphanage for Indigenous girls in the mountains of Mexico. Over the next 18 years, he broadened the scope of the organization to provide funding for 200 other education, health, micro-economic and human rights projects that contribute to self-sufficiency in the impoverished region.
