On December 19, 2009, Ernest Herrfort protected his family from an armed intruder, in Listowel, Ontario. A man armed with two guns entered an apartment building and started threatening residents in the hallway. Seeing this, Mr. Herrfort ran to call the police. The intruder followed him, and managed to get inside Mr. Herrfort's apartment, where he frantically waived his guns and shot off a round into the ceiling. Fearing for the safety of his family, Mr. Herrfort struggled with the gunman and restrained him until the police arrived.
