Richard S. Munro, M.B.
Medal of Bravery
On February 1, 2007, Richard Munro risked his life in an attempt to rescue a man from a burning vehicle, on Highway 401, near Cobourg, Ontario. Mr. Munro was travelling along the highway during a heavy winter storm when he saw a vehicle get hit by a tanker-trailer in the opposite lanes. He immediately stopped and ran across the busy highway to help. By the time he arrived at the scene, it had become a multi-vehicle pileup. Despite the flames, heat and smoke, Mr. Munro was able to help several people out of their damaged vehicles and bring them to a safer area. He had to abandon his efforts to rescue one driver when a tanker burst into flames and flammable liquids started to ignite along the ground.
