On February 8, 2002, Sylvain Bernier rescued a man and a woman from a hotel fire in Métis-sur-Mer, Quebec. Mr. Bernier was in the vicinity when he noticed flames escaping from the building. Told that the victims were on the second floor, he bounded up the stairs and opened a door leading into the hallway, which was thick with smoke. He groped his way toward the apartment, where he ran into one of the victims, who was disoriented. He hoisted the person on his shoulders and exited the inferno. Mr. Bernier then went back upstairs, passing right by a 400-litre propane tank whose safety valve was open and which was threatening to explode at any moment. Dodging the rapidly spreading flames, he re-exited the building and guided the second victim to safety.
