On May 30, 2000, Donna-Jean Meloche put her own life at risk to tend to a 19-year-old man who had been shot outside her apartment complex in Spruce Grove, Alberta. Hearing the gun blast, Ms. Meloche ran from her third-floor apartment and located the severely injured teenager lying in the backyard. She was providing assistance to the victim when the intoxicated and extremely agitated attacker emerged from a ground-floor apartment, brandishing a rifle, and began circling them. Undeterred, and with the gunman pointing his weapon randomly at them and the police, Ms. Meloche remained with the victim during the fifteen-minute standoff which allowed police to isolate and arrest the assailant, and paramedics to move in.
