Medal of Bravery
On June 26, 2001, Timothy Hallihan and Peter Jardine risked their lives to save a young girl from drowning in the Miramichi River in New Brunswick. Informed that the teenager swimming there was experiencing trouble, Mr. Hallihan jumped into the water and swam toward her, despite the strong current carrying them downstream. While shouting encouragement to her, he stopped on a sandbank to alert people on the riverside, then dived back into the water and reached the victim. Panic-stricken, the teenager dragged him underwater several times. Despite his growing exhaustion, Mr. Hallihan managed to break free and push her toward Mr. Jardine, who was approaching. While Mr. Hallihan struggled back to the river bank, Mr. Jardine, fighting the raging current, managed to calm the teenager and bring her toward the shore, where boaters came to their aid.
