On August 19, 1995, Susan Campbell went to the aid of three victims of an air plane crash, in Richmond, British Columbia. Ms. Campbell was jogging when she heard the fully-fuelled cargo plane hit the ground. She immediately ran towards the site, jumping over live power lines. Seeing the co-pilot hanging out of the cockpit window with flames surrounding him, she grabbed him by the shoulders and helped him from the wreckage. Informed by the victim that two people were still inside, she returned to the plane where the flight engineer was emerging from the window with his shirt and shoes on fire. As she was helping him, the third man appeared at the cockpit window and fell to the ground. Once she had assisted the engineer to safety, she returned to help the pilot. Ms. Campbell was assisted by another rescuer in carrying the pilot away from the plane. Regrettably, the man later succumbed to his injuries.
