On November 20, 2000, William Gibb placed his life in danger to rescue his co-worker from the attack of a knife-wielding thief, in Toronto, Ontario. Mr. Gibb and the victim were working the night shift at a local doughnut shop when two masked men burst into the store, brandishing knives. While one of them stood guard by the front door, the other vaulted over the counter and held a knife to the victim's throat, ordering her to open the cash register. Overhearing the commotion from a back room and realizing the imminent danger to his colleague, Mr. Gibb ran to her help. He grabbed the agitated man from behind and wrestled with him in an effort to disarm him. Unfortunately, Mr. Gibb sustained severe stab injuries to his back before the assailant could break free from his grip, and both thieves bolted from the store.
