Medal of Bravery
On April 19, 1999, Michael Hales and Rosemary Russell placed their lives in jeopardy to rescue a woman who was being stabbed in Sutton, Ontario. Mr. Hales and Ms. Russell were on opposite sidewalks of a busy downtown street when they saw a man chase the screaming woman onto the middle of the roadway, knock her down and begin stabbing her with a spring knife. Without concern for their own safety, Mr. Hales and Ms. Russell raced to the woman's help. Ms. Russell reached the scene first and, undaunted by the knife, managed to kick the aggressor until he let go of the victim. She was quickly joined by Mr. Hales who wrestled the weapon from the man and helped her restrain the assailant until police arrived. The victim recovered from her injuries.
