On August 9, 1999, fifteen-year-old Todd Campbell lost his life trying to save a friend from drowning in Albas Provincial Park, British Columbia. Todd and a friend had made their way to a large rock in the middle of a creek near the top of the triple-tiered Albas Falls. As they attempted to swim back to shore, Todd's friend lost his footing and fell off the rock into the fast-flowing water leading to the 15-metre-high falls. Seeing his friend's predicament, Todd tried desperately to help him back onto the slippery rock but he too started to lose his grip. Despite his precarious position, he told his friend to grab hold of his leg but the pull of the current was too strong for him to support both their weights. Todd fell into the water and both boys were swept over the falls and drowned. Their bodies were later recovered by the authorities.
