On January 29, 2000, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Anthony McNaughton lost his life while protecting an employee from an attack by her estranged husband. The aggressor had made his way behind the counter of the coffee shop and was threatening the woman with a butcher knife. Hearing the domestic dispute from a back room, Mr. McNaughton realized the gravity of the situation and ran to his colleague's help. Without hesitation, he stepped in and confronted the agitated man, allowing the woman to take refuge. During the struggle that ensued, Mr. McNaughton was stabbed several times. Although fatally wounded, he instructed the woman to save herself and run for help which prompted the attacker to flee. Sadly, Mr. McNaughton succumbed to his wounds but, thanks to his valiant efforts, the woman was unharmed.
