On December 9, 1999, 18-year-old Julien Perron-Gagné prevented a woman from committing suicide at a subway station in Montréal, Quebec. Mr. Perron-Gagné was waiting for a subway train when he was alerted that a woman was lying on the track, dangerously close to the high-voltage rails. Without regard for his own safety, he immediately jumped to her rescue. After many attempts, he succeeded in getting the heavy, uncooperative woman to a standing position. Despite the sound of the train signalling its close proximity, he continued to try pushing her off the track while others pulled at her from the platform but these efforts were in vain. Determined to save the victim, Mr. Perron-Gagné persisted in his attempts to remove her from the path of the oncoming train. Fortunately, the conductor had been alerted and was able to stop the train on time.
