On December 7, 1999, Louis George Lalande apprehended an armed bank robber in Oshawa, Ontario. Mr. Lalande was doing charity work at a local shopping mall when he heard several gun shots from the bank across the hall. He saw a man in the bank waving a hand gun, forcing people to the floor and demanding money from the tellers. Fearing that the aggressor would harm innocent victims, Mr. Lalande crept up behind him and, without concern for his own safety, repeatedly struck him with a metal folding chair. Others who arrived while he was confronting the dazed robber were able to knock the gun from his hand and restrain him until police arrived.
