On April 17, 1999, Myra Baloun saved a seven-year-old girl from a vicious cougar attack near Hope, British Columbia. The child was walking near a campground with two friends when a cougar pounced without warning and knocked her to the ground. Alerted by the screams, Mrs. Baloun rushed to the scene and found the animal on top of the little girl, mauling her head and face. Yelling to distract the animal, Mrs. Baloun grabbed a stick and repeatedly struck the cougar on the head forcing it to release its hold on the child. With the dazed animal still in close proximity, she picked up the young victim and carried her to safety.
