On May 24, 1999, Correctional Officer Bill Kostick rescued a 13-year-old boy from Lake of the Woods at Kenora/Keewatin, Ontario. Mr. Kostick was driving across a bridge when he noticed an unattended boat spinning in circles, then heard the cries of its teenage driver who was flailing wildly in the water some 250 metres from shore. Mr. Kostick immediately removed some of his clothing and jumped into the frigid waters. Battling the strong current he managed to reach the panicked boy, turned him onto his back and swam back to shore where the victim was treated for hypothermia.
