On the night of September 26, 1998, Jonathan Dupont came upon three men who were harassing two girls in Montréal, Quebec. Mr. Dupont was getting out of his car when he saw the aggressive behaviour of the men. Fearing for the safety of the girls, he accompanied them to their nearby residence, but the men broke through the door uttering threats. Disregarding his own safety, Mr. Dupont confronted them and was stabbed several times during the altercation that followed. He nonetheless continued to fight the attackers until they fled before the arrival of the authorities, alerted by telephone by one of the victims. Despite his injuries, Mr. Dupont pursued the fugitives and succeeded in catching and holding two of them until the police arrived.
