On June 25, 1998, Daniel Lincourt rescued his nephew after the Cessna plane they had been flying in crashed on takeoff in a ravine some 50 km north of James Bay, Quebec. Despite a severe back injury sustained on impact, Mr. Lincourt managed to release himself from his awkward position. He then freed the adolescent, who was injured and in a state of panic, by ripping out the seat pinning the boy to the instrument panel. After trying in vain to open the damaged door, Mr. Lincourt got the young man out through the shattered windshield before painfully extricating himself from the wreck. Fearing that the fuel leaking from the punctured wings would catch fire, he dragged his nephew to safety, then climbed out of the 25-metre ravine and walked two kilometres to find help.
