Medal of Bravery
On December 1, 1997, Christian Lachapelle and teenagers Geneviève Dion and Julie St-Germain convinced a student to release the students he was holding captive at La Polyvalente La Forêt in Amos, Québec. Armed with a rifle, a pistol and several knives, the assailant had taken about thirty students hostage before firing in the direction of a supervisor. Fearing for the safety of his students, Christian Lachapelle, a student teacher, began talking to the assailant and, with the help of students St-Germain and Dion, succeeded in calming him enough to enable Ms. Dion to take his knives and ammunition belt away from him. A full hour and a half later, Mr. Lachapelle, Ms. Dion and Ms. St-Germain were able to convince the assailant to give himself up to police. Fortunately, nobody was hurt in this incident.
