On May 26, 1997 in Selkirk, Manitoba, Deborah Fey went to the help of an elderly man whose clothes had been ignited by an out-of-control grass fire. Mrs. Fey was driving by with her daughter when she saw the man, his clothes on fire, fall into the flames. She immediately ran to him, removed her outer clothing and smothered the flames that engulfed the man's body but they flared up again each time he tried to get up. Determined to help him despite her own burns, Mrs. Fey continued fighting the flames until they were brought under control and others arrived to provide assistance. Regrettably, the victim succumbed to his injuries four days later.
