On June 8, 1997 near Souris, Manitoba, Cory Brown tried in vain to rescue a friend from drowning in the Souris River. Mr. Brown was fishing with friends on the river bank when the woman accidently slipped into the river. Mr. Brown immediately jumped in and managed to grab hold of her but the powerful current propelled them into the backwash of a nearby dam. Although the couple struggled to stay afloat, they were soon overcome by extreme fatigue and separated. While others attempted in vain to help them, the strong current pulled Mr. Brown out of the backwash and carried him to calmer waters. Regrettably, his friend could not escape the turbulent waters and was drowned.
