On January 3, 1998, Trent Parr saved a friend whose snowmobile had broken through the ice near Port Hope Simpson in Labrador, Newfoundland. The men were travelling on snowmobiles when the friend's vehicle broke through the ice some 12 metres from shore. Hampered by his heavy, soaked clothing, the 65-year-old victim stood chest deep in water, on the handle bars of his sunken machine, unable to get onto the ice by himself. Having safely reached shore, Mr. Parr grabbed two large branches and attempted to make his way to the victim but twice fell through the ice in sub-zero temperatures. Numbed by cold but undeterred, Mr. Parr used an axe to cut down enough trees to build a bridge, crawled onto it, extended a pole to his friend and pulled him out.
