On December 19, 1997, 14-year-old Mark Johnson saved a six-year-old boy from drowning in the harbour at Pollard's Point, Newfoundland. Mark and his young friend were playing hockey when the puck was accidentally hit onto thin ice. As the young boy went to retrieve the puck, Mark shouted warnings and the boy stopped but as he leaned forward with his stick to check the ice, he fell through and was completely submerged. Mark immediately skated towards him and, as the ice started to crack, he lay down on his stomach and inched his way towards the hole. He was then able to grab the boy by the arms and haul him out of the water.
