On June 19, 1996, Chris Boyce rescued a suicidal woman from drowning in Richmond, British Columbia. On his way to work shortly after midnight, Mr. Boyce heard on a police scanner that a woman was standing on the railing of a nearby bridge. He immediately ran to the scene and discovered that the woman had jumped into the dangerous Fraser River. Guided by the dim glow of a truck's spotlight, Mr. Boyce jumped into the frigid and turbulent waters and made his way to the woman who had sunk under the surface, some 60 metres out. He managed to grab hold of her hair and pulled the struggling woman to the surface. Although exhausted from battling the strong riptide that repeatedly pulled them farther out, Mr. Boyce eventually reached the shore and handed the unconscious victim to the authorities.
